Qualification update

Closely tied to engineering and industrial design, manufacture is the process of transforming raw materials to finished goods. Derived from the Latin word manu factura, meaning ‘making by hand’, the earliest manufacturers did just that – worked as single-skilled artisans handcrafting products for their communities (blacksmiths, stone masons, carpenters, drapers, furriers, goldsmiths, saddlers, etc.).

Today, manufacturing refers to the making by machine or industrial process. However, its scope extends beyond mere production or fabrication of instruments, machines and equipment. It seeks to do more with less – and this in the face of dwindling natural resources.  It seeks to analyse, manage and optimise industrial policy, manufacturing operations, supply chains and networks, technologies, and systems to discover and apply the right tool or tools for the job, be they physical or procedural.
