AS & A Level Government and Politics Specification

Qualification update

OCR is currently reforming its GCSEs, AS and A Level in line with the government programme of general qualification reform. However, we have made the difficult decision not to redevelop AS and A Levels in Government and Politics.

  • Learn more about our reformed AS, A Level and GCSE subjects

This specification examines the structures of authority and power in the UK – legislature, executive and judiciary – and how these differ from those of other political systems. Candidates develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes.

Benefits

  • Based on consultation with QCA and examiners, feedback from centres and market research
  • The ethos and strengths have been maintained in the four unit (two at AS level, two at A2) format
  • The assessment burden is cut by removing the examined coursework element
  • Candidates are encouraged to engage with contemporary politics and current political debates.
