Level 1/2 Award Information Technology (IT) 3735

About Level 1/2 Award Information Technology (IT) 3735 Syllabus

Our Level 1/2 Awards in non-EBacc subjects are ideally suited to learners with a preference for practical, in addition to, theoretical learning. Many of them are tailored towards specific career areas and all have a focus on creativity.

These vocational qualifications fulfil entry requirements for academic and vocational study post-16, and will count as equivalent to one GCSE in the Key Stage 4 performance tables.

Who is this Level 1/2 Award in IT for?

This qualification is for learners aged 14–16 years who prefer to study IT in a context that allows them to learn and be assessed in ways that are practical and relevant to the IT sector. Learners are required to take theoretical concepts and translate them into a workable, practical solution to meet a business or user need.

The IT Level 1/2 Award is a vocational, GCSE equivalent qualification designed to develop learners’ knowledge and understanding through the application of knowledge in a work-related context.

What will learners study?

IT is about the real world, practical application of theory. IT professionals are the users of technology, utilizing established building blocks and existing operating systems, software and applications, to create a system to solve a problem. IT professionals interact with clients and co-workers, and help to explain how to solve technology problems or work to construct a technology solution that meets a need. This qualification will equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to translate business/user needs into practical and workable IT solutions.

Learners taking this qualification will study the fundamental knowledge, understanding and skills required in the two IT occupational areas covered by this specification: creative and data management.

Learning will take place through a mixture of real life case studies, practical tasks and a study of theoretical concepts, enabling learners to develop their IT knowledge, understanding and skills. Learning will be engaging and take place in a vocational context, allowing the learner to create products or artefacts that demonstrate their ability to put theory into practice.

The occupational areas have been chosen from industry research showing current shortages of skilled people within the creative and data management areas.

Will knowledge and skills developed be useful for further studies?

Learners will gain a range of practical skills in IT. They’ll then focus on the system life cycle to design, create, test and evaluate a solution to an IT problem. Learners will underpin this with fundamental knowledge and understanding of IT including:

  • web technologies
  • software
  • networks
  • securing IT systems
  • data and information
  • emerging technologies.

Learners will achieve a qualification that is relevant to the needs of the industry, placing them in a sound position for progression to further study and equipping them with relevant employment skills.

Which subjects complement this course?

This qualification will be complemented by a range of GCSEs including Maths, Computer Science and English. This Level 1/2 Award explores the fundamentals of IT and, as such, offers an IT qualification that can be taken alone or alongside GCSE Computer Science.

GCSE Computer Science provides knowledge and skills in the specific language of algorithms and programming, whilst the Level 1/2 Award allows learners to apply IT knowledge and skills to a broader range of occupational areas.

It can also be delivered alongside other Level 1/2 Award such as Design Technology, Sport and Performing Arts.
